A Garratt In Miniature
Just to update followers to this blog on the state of the 16! Simply put, we bought a new house last month and are in the middle of gutting and rebuilding it.
My other half seems to think that this is more important than building a new workshop…. But, I’m not going to win π
So, house first, workshop second!
Next year will see the loco progress once again, but in a new home.
Cheers, Chris
Tsss, women never know what really matters. π
You know Chris
She’s quite tolerant, is the missus! I can have the workshop before the conservatory!
oops to early on the Enter button.
You know Chris, the sooner the house is done…..the bigger the workshop is allowed to grow π
Indeed! A bigger workshop is certainly called for to replace the asbestos garage. Block built, hipped roof with big wooden doors!
Hi Chris,
I’m just starting out on a 5″ LMS garratt (Freelance to some degree), to cut down on a lot of design work i’m using Don Youngs’ drawings for the BR class 2 to make up the boogies.
I’m currently looking at the design of the Pivot, Sadly it will be August before I’m in the UK and can visit the NRM to view there archives for the original drawings.
I’m hoping you may be able to help me for now, On the pivot is there an allowance for rotation around the vertical axis to allow the engine to deal with changes in incline?
Many Thanks
Sean
Sean,
I’ve sent you an email.
Cheers, Chris
G’day Chris,
Fantastic work you are doing there on the NGG16.
I’m considering building one in 7 1/4″ gauge and have found the progress on your 5″ version inspiring!
How is it progressing more recently?
Regards,
Dave.
Hi Dave,
Thanks for your comments. Unfortunately the project is still at the same state. Weβre still finishing off the new house and we have a new baby on the way in November β so my hobbies (and life!!!) have taken a back seat at the moment. Rest assured that the project WILL be finished when time permits.
Apologies to all my followers, but we need somewhere to live first before the hobbies are allowed to start again! (so I’ve been told!)
Cheers, Chris
How is the NGG16 going ? I am hoping one day to build a 1.75″ gauge model (in 7/8″ to the foot scale) and your model is a great inspiration.
Hi Jon. Can’t say there’s been any progress on the Garratt. Unfortunately, real life is still getting in the way. Our 1 year old daughter takes up most of my time at the moment. Ready assured, that although on the back burner, the 16 will be completed. But when?
Hi Chris. It’s been some time since we last saw some activity on this blog. I do not intend to press you, I’m just curious what the state of matters is. Is there any activity anytime soon? Hope you and the missus are well.
Oh stupid, only now I read your latest comment. A daughter no less . Congratulations! Now that is a demanding “project” π Hope you’re all well. My question about the NGG16 was just for information. Family matters first!
Thank you Rene. Unfortunately no progress on the Garratt, but I’m getting to the end of the Hunslet refurb. So hopefully fingers crossed a re-start will happen this year.
Cheers, Chris
Hi,
Anything going on here? Sad to see no progress since 2012. Hope the project is still alive.
Hi Steve,
The project is very much still alive but not so much kicking at the moment. I have different priorities, with a young family and no ‘proper’ workshop to play in. Progress is being made, all be it very slowly.
Cheers, Chris
Hi there,
Iβve been visiting the WHR last weekend after years that I was planning to and I got totally fascinated by the Beyer-Peacock NG G16 steam engines.
Therefore as soon as I got back home I started looking around to find out any possible resource to get me started in building my own model (in the OO9 scale as I already have a Double Fairlie kit for the FR).
One of the most useful resources is as well your blog, which is currently paused for the very valid reasons you already mentioned above β but still, I found anything related to your build very interesting.
What I miss now is some official drawings, been looking at the SAR Steam website, but I am unsure whether it is still operational or not.
Just out of curiosity, where did you source yours?
Thanks in advance,
Alex
Hi Alex. Thanks for your message.
I bought the entire sar drawing sets from sar steam many years ago. Don’t think he’s doing them anymore, but not sure. He was kind of winding down when I bought them.
The NGG16 drawings are missing details in some parts and I’ve had to fill in the gaps with help from others, including Boston lodge.
I guess for 009 you only need the front, side, top elevations? I can see if I can sort those out for you?
Cheers, Chris
Hi Chris,
I guess all the external views plus some cab drawings could be useful – I took as well a lot of pictures while in Caernarfon and Porthmadog, so I think I could get away with that π
If you could send me some drawings that would be really appreciated. I think you can see my email address from the comments.

Hi Chris,
Is there any chance of getting your .stl file for the cylinder relief valves? i would like to get printed in my scale 1:13.7 for a electric powered NGG-11 model
You can contact me off list at email listed below
Thanks,
Steve King
Hey Chris, hows Dad life? Hectic if it’s anything like mine! You been allowed back in the workshop yet? It’s been years since we had a update!
